A bold strummer and strong flatpicker, this Brazilian D-28 does exactly what a vintage Martin dreadnought is supposed to do, and it does it well. It’s a fun guitar to play, stands out in the mix, and is sure to please.

Between about 1948 and 1964 little had changed in the design of a Martin D-28. Minor variations in bracing layout, pickguard shape and differences in tuning machines were about all that Martin tweaked during that period. Soon after this guitar was built in Martin’s new Sycamore factory things began to change in the design of most Martin models. Drop-in saddle bridges, black pickguards, hollow tube neck support, bigger bridgeplates, and ultimately, the switch to Indian rosewood all occurred in the second half of the 1960s. This 1964 guitar features all the pre-’65 features that we equate with a vintage D-28.

This example is in excellent condition. It has minor repaired top cracks at the inside pickguard margin and the adjacent binding margin, but no other cracks or issues. The neck has been reset and refretted, the bridge has been reglued, and the original bridge plate has had its pinholes rebuilt with maple dust and glue. The Grover Patent Pending Rotomatic tuners, nut, bridgepins and endpin are original; the saddle is a well-made bone replacement. The guitar’s finish is entirely original and unmodified, free of touch-ups, and shows average playwear to the back of the neck, body edges, soundhole, and headstock corners. There are a handful of dings and dents but nothing deserving of extra description.

Playability is excellent thanks to a good neck angle and somewhat recent pro refret. The frets show little wear and play cleanly in all neck positions. We have the guitar set up with 13s and an action of 5-7 64ths. It’s a dreamy flat-picker.

The neck is quite rounded in feel, with a slight suggestion of a soft V in the carve. 1-11/16” nut width, neck depth of .764 at the 1st fret (the fretboard was thinned somewhat during a refret), 2-1/8” string spread at the saddle, 25.4” scale.
