Gibson's single cutaway Les Paul Standard was reintroduced into the Gibson lineup in 1968 after being discontinued in favour of the SG-style Les Paul at the end of 1960. While the first reissue Les Paul Standards featured a pair of P-90 pickups, the model was updated in mid 1969 to feature the same mini-humbucker pickups that Gibson had been using in their Epiphone range throughout the 1960s. Along with the pickup change the model's name was updated to the "Les Paul Deluxe". The model was a staple in the Gibson catalogue for over a decade until its discontinuation in 1985.

This 1973 Deluxe is a fine example of a Les Paul from the early 1970s. The guitar is completely original apart from a fresh set of frets that were just installed by our repair shop and a replacement output jack plate. With a stunning gold finish and a set of mini humbuckers that sound remarkably good, this Deluxe is an exciting vintage Les Paul that we feel is a lot of guitar for the money. The only flaw to be found is some discolouration on the guitar's top behind the tailpiece that is the result of a sticker that lived on the guitar long ago.

Punching far above its weight in terms of tone-per-dollar value, this 1973 Gibson Les Paul Deluxe offers full, harmonically rich tones with a little extra snap, clarity, and airiness than the typical Gibson Humbucker from this era. With a full 1-11/16" nut width, a first fret depth of 0.775 and a full-feeling 0.958” depth at that twelfth, this neck profile is quite comfortable with a carve reminiscent of a '63-'64 era Gibson. Playability is excellent with the professional fret work, and the guitar weighs in at a comfortable 9.5 lbs.

As vintage guitar prices continue to rise, the early '70s Les Paul Deluxes have become one of the last Gibson solid body guitars from the original Kalamazoo factory that can still be had for less than a new Custom Shop guitar. With all of the tone, feel, and vibe that one hopes to find in a vintage Gibson, this Les Paul Deluxe is an excellent entry point into the vintage guitar market.

Pickup DC readings of 6K (N) and 5.7K (B). Pot codes of 137 7251, denote the 51st week of 1972 manufacture.
