1956 Gibson SJ

FON U2536. One of those rare, rare guitars that have survived the years as if they hadn't happened. This '56 Southern Jumbo is an exceptional example, nearly unplayed, and crack-free. The guitar is as close to perfect as they can be, with not a single reglued or loose brace, perfect neck angle, unworn frets, and original kluson tuners and lacquered-in nut.

A beautiful instrument, the guitar's sunburst finish is in excellent condition and still has its factory shine. It's developed fine craze-lines as one would expect, but is very light on dings and dents. There are minor finish chips on the headstock's corners, a few tiny dings on the body, and light buckle-impressions on the guitar's back; but little that will show in our photos. The tuner buttons are nice replacements, and the bone saddle and Antique Acoustic bridge pins were installed in our shop a number of years back. The original pins and saddle are in the case.

A very pure-voiced SJ, with a full, round bass, clean mid-range, excellent balance across the strings, strong fundamental, and ample headroom, this guitar has instantly become a shop favourite. It does exactly what you want it to do, and rewards a medium pick attack with a wonderfully full-bodied and rounded tone that's neither dark nor bright.

The '56 neck has a classic Gibson rounded carve, 1-11/16" nut width, and 24.75" scale. Frets are level, and the board is in great shape, with perfect relief and no hump at the body. Action is set at 5-6 64ths with nearly full height saddle and perfect playability. The bridge is full height as well, and although its wings are thin, there is no evidence of it ever having been reglued.

Sitka Spruce top with straight X bracing and sunburst finish; mahogany back and sides, multi-ply body bindings. Bound rosewood fingerboard with pearloid inlays; pearl headstock logo and crown.

With modern TKL Deluxe hard shell case.
