1929 Gibson Nick Lucas Special

A wonderfully responsive and lightweight guitar, this small-body mahogany Nick Lucas Special has a spaciousness and airiness distinctive of the 9000 FON Gibsons built right around 1929 and 1930. The guitar's deep body depth and "A' bracing adds a subtle strength to the mids – one of the hallmarks of the voice of this incarnation of the Nick Lucas Special model. It's a particularly appealing mix of X-braced and ladder-braced tonality, with an extra bit of warmth in the low frequency range thanks to the increased air volume of the deeper body.

The guitar is in excellent playing order and in need of no further repairs. There are a number of repaired top and back cracks, a repaired heel crack, a plugged jack-hole in the treble side, tailpiece screw holes, a nicely installed replacement bridgeplate and good looking reproduction bridge. The finish is original throughout, with localized touch-up on the neck heel and along the center-seam repair above the bridge. The bridge and bridgeplate were made and installed by us about a decade back.

Original frets play well up the neck, the original banjo tuners hold their tuning without issue, and the set up is to our shop standard. The guitar plays easily, cleanly, and comfortably. Round neck with a 1-3/4” nut-width and short 24.2” scale length. Bridge pin string spacing is 2-3/8”.

Despite the repairs the guitar has seen, it's structurally up to task and just a beautiful sounding instrument. It's feathery-light, responsive, and very alive. An excellent choice for someone looking for the unique sound and size of a small-body Nick Lucas Special model, without the pricing these guitars are normally associated with.

One of our current shop favourites.
