We ordered this guitar as the single left-handed instrument in our very first Collings order back in 2012, when we opened our Waterloo location. It’s now back where it started, and every bit as incredible as we remember it to have been. With its 12-fret 000-sized body, the 0001 is a small guitar that sounds big, or a big guitar that sounds like a smaller one, as you see fit. It’s big on power and focus and offers amazing string balance, with trebles that are thick and meaty, strong, dark, and well defined bases, and a midrange that’s focussed but not overpowering. It can deliver under a heavy left-hand pick attack, and pretties up under a lighter touch.
Manogany and Sitka spruce body with tortoise bindings and style 1 appointments, which reference vintage style 18. Scalloped bracing, small bridge plate, and a small pyramid bridge. Tortoise celluloid pickguard, wooden purflings and rosette, ebony fittings, bone nut and saddle, and nickel Waverly tuning machines. The neck has a rounded carve and contemporary feel. The nut width is 1-3/4” and the 1st fret neck depth is .873”. Scale length is 25.5” and string spread at the bridge is 2-3/16”.
This Collings 0001 Lefty remains in near-perfect condition and has just enjoyed a set-up in our shop. We have it strung with 12-53 strings with an action of 5-6 64ths at the 12th fret. The guitar is just about flawless, except for a small ding on the treble side of the neck by the 5th fret, which no lefty player will ever see or feel. There are no repairs or other finish flaws of any note, and the original fretwork shows very little playwear.
