2013 Triggs F5 Fern
Jim Triggs’ history with F5 style mandolins is long, and includes a 6 year run in Gibson’s Nashville Custom Shop where he was responsible for overseeing the production of the company’s first F-5L Loar reproductions. After leaving Gibson in the early 1990s, Triggs continued building carved instruments but from the late 1990s on has focused on mandolin building.
This F-5 was signed in late 2013 by Jim Triggs and his son Ryan. It features a two-piece back of densely figured maple, and a tone-bar braced top that appears to be red spruce. Sunburst lacquer finish, fern headstock inlay, pearl nut, arrowhead vintage style tuners, Gibson style adjustable bridge, and a cast tailpiece. The ebony fretboard features a slight radius, guitar-size fretwire, nubbed ivoroid binding, and a faux ‘scoop’ beyond the 22nd fret.
This example is in excellent condition and shows no repairs or modifications. There is some light to moderate fretwear in the first 5 frets but playability remains excellent. It has been set-up in our shop with 11-40 strings and a low action of just over 3 64ths at the 12th fret.
