1966 Gibson Melody Maker-D

A clean and original Melody Maker Double built it 1966. The Melody maker was Gibson’s budget solidbody through the 1960s and featured a mahogany slab body with set in neck, and pickguard-mounted electronics. By today’s standards there really wasn’t all too much ‘budget’ about this model but, in the mid 1960s, the stripped down cosmetics, simple body shaping and single-coil Melody Maker pickups were all designed in an effort to keep the pricing of this model attractive to new guitarists.

This example is in great shape and completely original, including finish and electronics. The color is dark and unfaded, metal parts are shiny, and tuners and electronics work well. There is some scratching on the pickguard and the regular assortment of dings and dents on the body faces and edges. The neck angle is great, and the frets show little playwear. There is a slight rise in the fretboard at the body which may cause some fret buzz in the higher reaches of the neck. The Vibrola tailpiece works well, however many players might prefer to remove it and use the bridge as a wrap-around for better tone and break angle.

Typical 1966 neck carve, with a nicely rounded feel, narrow 1-9/16” nut width that fills out by the 3rd fret. 6.1 lbs.

With original chipboard case.
