David Martin Concert Rosewood

Folkway employee and repairperson, David Martin, is a talented young builder from right here in Waterloo who’s been crafting guitars for the last five or so years. Trained under Sergei de Jonge, Martin came to Folkway with plenty of guitar building experience and some serious woodworking skills. Coupled with his exposure to our collection of some of the best sounding guitars in Canada, David Martin’s guitars have evolved to combine the dry, woody openness of a very lightly built vintage flattop, with the aesthetic and building style inspired by the de Jonge school.

This guitar is astoundingly good. And I’m not saying that because the builder is on staff here. It’s truly an incredible sounding guitar. The lows are well-developed, defined, and wide open. The trebles are full, clear, and bold. And the mid-range is in perfect balance to fill in the mix. There’s a cavernous grand piano-like openness to the instrument that’s only heard in guitars built lightly enough. Long and short, it’s a new guitar with amazing maturity and complexity.

Beautifully constructed with simple appointments and a masterfully applied French polish finish, this Concert-sized guitar has a lower-bout that measures 14.5” across and a scale of 25.4”. The Sitka spruce top is of the highest calibre, with evenly spaced grain and perfect quarter. Straight-grained rosewood back and sides with mitred purflings and rosewood bindings. Ebony fingerboard and bridge, bone nut and compensated saddle, Gotoh 510 tuning machines.

The neck has a rounded C carve that’s neither fat nor thin, and a nut width of 1-3/4”. The mahogany features a rubbed shellac and beeswax finish that’s fabulously smooth and fast. String spread at the saddle is 2-3/16”.

Under the top you’ll find a fairly traditional X bracing pattern with tapered braces and a small maple bridge plate, reminiscent of a an early 30’s Martin. The workmanship inside mirrors that of the outside.

Scoring incredibly high marks for tone and build, this is an instrument that’s not to be missed.
