2004 Chuck Merrill 00-Koa

Among the finest builders you’ve likely never heard of, Chuck Merrill spends his time building guitars between timber framing jobs, restoring boats, and a myriad of other high-level pursuits of craftsmanship.

This highly figured Koa and Sitka 00 was built in 2004 and has settled-in to become a particularly fabulous sounding small body guitar.

Steeped in vintage, the Merrill 00-Koa is something of a prewar 00-18 / L-00 hybrid, with a wonderful midrange, plenty of warmth in the bass and treble, and very expressive mids. There are great overtones in the guitar, and they’re balanced nicely against a clear and focused fundamental. Volume is above average, and the guitar has more headroom than you’d likely expect from a modern 00 build.

Beyond that, the neck on this guitar is just about heaven. It’s a very round carve with the hint of a V down the centerline of the back; and turns gracefully into its shapely and 1930’s-esque heel.

Tapered headstock with blank rosewood overlay, open-geared nickel Gotoh tuning machines with gold bushings (a Chuck Merrill hallmark), angle-bottomed bone nut and comfortably radiused and rolled fingerboard.

Figured Koa back and sides are mated to a Sitka top with tasteful abalone style 18 rosette. Maple bindings with simple black and white purflings, gloss lacquer finish, and abalone fingerboard dots.

The guitar is in excellent condition less a few scratches here and there. There are no cracks or repairs, and the set-up is excellent. Frets show just a little bit of wear in the first position, neck angle and saddle height are just right, too.
