2014 Martin D-28 Authentic 1937
Martin's D-28 Authentic 1937 is a careful recreation of the company's original wide-neck, forward braced herringbone D-28s built between 1935 and mid 1938. Martin went to great lengths to capture every detail in the design of this guitar, so that playing a new D-28 Authentic 1937 would be a lot like playing an old 1937 D-28. They've done a remarkable job, and the guitar sounds tremendous – with a huge low end, lots of power throughout the fretboard, big, bold trebles, and a beautiful dark voice with a balanced set of overtones. It's a strong flatpicker, and does what it's supposed to do incredibly well.
Madagascar rosewood back and sides, Adirondack red spruce top with forward shifted scalloped braces, ivoroid bindings, and tortoise celluloid bevelled pickguard mounted under the lacquer finish. 30's style ebony belly bridge with through-cut style bone saddle and reproduction black-eye unslotted pins. 2-5/16 bridge pin spacing. The neck has a rounded feel with a hint of soft V as was the norm in '37, 1-3/4” nut, with a taper to 2-1/4” at the 12th fret. Ebony fingerboard with slotted diamond inlays and ivoroid micro side dots. T bar neck reinforcement and vintage sized frets, bone nut and saddle. Old-style headstock logo on a Madagascar rosewood headstock overlay, and nickel Waverly tuners.
The guitar is in perfect condition and presents as just about new. The frets are unworn, and there is no playwear on the finish. Set-up here at Folkway with 13-56 strings this D-28 Authentic plays perfectly.
