1969 Martin D-28
Serial # 246422. One of the last Brazilian rosewood D-28s, this one was built right around the time Woodstock was happening in upstate New York. Looking at this guitar, though, you'd not suspect that good Brazilian rosewood was in short supply. The back and side wood used for this D-28 is simply gorgeous.
A one-owner guitar that we've known for about a decade, this D-28 has been loved and well cared for throughout its life. In around 2005 it was through Folkway for a neck reset, new bridge, and a repro pickguard (all under warranty!). We hot-rodded the guitar a bit at that time as well, replacing the original oversized bridge plate with an earlier-style small maple plate. The replacement bridge is accurately sized and shaped, and uses the guitar's original bridge pins. The saddle is bone. The frets were redone by us as well, and haven't been played much since the work was done. Original ivory nut and Grover tuners.
Original finish throughout; no top cracks, no side cracks, but there are a number of back cracks that have all been repaired. No brace repairs, and the replacement bridge plate is unworn. Excellent neck angle, perfect playability, action of 5-7 64ths at the 12th fret. 1-11/16 nut, 25.4" scale.
A very fine sounding D-28 with an immense presence, very well developed bass response, and full, bold trebles. It's a loud guitar, and an excellent flatpicker, but maintains a rich set of overtones at every volume.
