1933 Martin 0-18
Built at the height of Martin's "Golden Age' this 0-18 offers all the 1930's tone a player could long for at a price point that's incredibly appealing. It's a fabulous sounding instrument, and has an open, developed, dark, and strong tone. The guitar has had top repairs and restoration, but it certainly doesn't sound like it. A flat-pick does amazing things with this 0-18, as does a solid right hand fingerstyle. The trebles are thick and rounded, and the string balance is just right.
The guitar's neck, back, and sides are all original, with original finish and tuners. The top has been restored and refinished. There is a 1” wide splice visible on the lower bass side, a number of top cracks repaired, and the bridge and plate are replacements. The bracing is original, as is the pickguard, and the top's thickness measures very close to original spec. The spruce has not been thinned significantly. There is a 3” long patch in the bass side near the bottom of the guitar that's seen localized finish repair.
The guitar's original bar frets play well, and the instrument is set up with normal action and a very low saddle. Playability is excellent, and the neck feel is about as good as they get. Martin's necks throughout the 1930's are among the most nicely carved in history.
Sure, we all love completely original guitars, but we're really pleased to have a restored and affordable 1933 Martin 0-18 to offer. The guitar is in need of no further repairs, it plays great, and has a tone that's on par with the best of them.
