1964 Fender Esquire

It would likely be tough to find a 1963 or '64 Fender Esquire that's much nicer than this one. From finish to frets this guitar scores top marks, and gets bonus points for its original case, hangtag, and feathery 6.9 lbs total weight. A two-owner guitar without any modifications, perfect frets, and some of the best the Pre-CBS era had to offer.

Light butterscotch blonde finish over ash, body dated 12/63, single-ply white pickguard. Completely original and unmodified electronic circuit with pots dated 64-10 and pickup resistance of 6.3 kOhms. Veneer rosewood fingerboard with clay dots, original frets and original nut. Silver and black spaghetti logo with DES Patent numbers; Kluson single-line tuners. Original thin lacquer finish throughout, with minor dings on the body's faces and edges but no real play wear. The neck finish is in remarkably great shape.

This '64 Esquire is an incredibly lively and resonant guitar with a remarkable unplugged tone and a neck carve that's as close to heaven as it gets down here on earth. It's toneful, quick, and present, and just a blast to play. The neck dates October of '63, and has that perfect not-too-big and not-too-small kind of thing going on, with just enough depth through the middle to fill things out well. So many players (author included) feel that '62 and '63 guitars are built with some of the best playing necks in Fender's history.

The guitar's setup and fretwork are excellent. The original nut has never been removed and still plays cleanly, the original frets show almost no wear and have not been dressed since leaving the factory in very early '64. Tuning machines are in perfect working order and bridge saddles and screws are unworn too. Original strap buttons, screws, string tree and all hardware. Apart from a long-missing bridge cover the guitar is 100% stock and complete.

The guitar's original hardshell case is in condition similar to that of the guitar. Serial numbered hang-tag is included in the case pocket.
