1959 Kay K-24 with DeArmond
Kay's K-24 was one of the company's first cut-away flattop models. Introduced in the mid/late 1950's the K-24 featured a 17” wide body with solid spruce top, ladder bracing, and a two-tone sunburst. The scale length was long, at nearly 26”, and added some extra tension on the strings to drive the big guitar's top.
This example features a cool DeArmond sound hole mounted pickup that's been hard-wired to the endpin jack, and a gorgeous replacement bridge with glued-in bone saddle (the original featured an adjustable insert that pretty much killed tone). The instrument is in excellent condition and without any cracks or significant repairs. Original finish, frets, and tuners too. The neck has a nut width of 1-11/16” and a rounded D carve. 2-1/8” string spread at the bridge. Action of 5-6 64ths.
With its big ladder-braced body and long scale, the guitar has a unique voice. Fabulous midrange projection, treble cut, and - thanks to all that air volume - plenty of bass. Best off, it's all vintage blues when you plug it in. It's thick and meaty, and the high-output DeArmond single coil like to push the front end of any tube amp into crunchy and fat overdrive. We love it.
