1929 Gibson TB-3 Conversion

FON 9478. A particularly fine sounding archtop TB-3 5 string conversion, fitted with a very nicely made reproduction neck. The Mastertone TB-3 was among Gibson's most popular models in the late 1920's, and featured intricate fingerboard and headstock inlays, nickel hardware and a maple resonator. This example is built with a tube and plate flange, and is accompanied by a flat-head conversion tone ring, should you want to install it. We cannot speak to who made the reproduction neck or flathead conversion ring, but both of are very high quality.

The banjo's hardware is completely original but for the tailpiece and tuning machines -- two of which are Keith tuners. The rim measures round, and is " thick, with original finish and Mastertone label.

The replacement neck is gorgeously made, with figured maple, three-ply center lamination and matching heel-cap, and historically accurate headstock and volute. Sunburst lacquer finish, with years of playwear. Excellent heel/rim fit, and perfect neck angle. Bound ebony fingerboard, bone nut, Mastertone inlay. Flat fingerboard and 1-1/4" width at the nut. Refinished maple resonator with interior finish intact. It's not over-sanded, and does its job perfectly.

An excellent 5 string with a very inviting voice, lovely feel, frets, and set-up, and classic pre-war looks.

With 1970's Gibson hardshell case.
