1996 Gibson ES-165 Herb Ellis

Essentially a modern version of the single pickup ES-175, the Herb Ellis model filled a serious hole in the Gibson lineup upon its introduction in the early 1990's. Fitted with a PAF-inspired humbucker in the neck position, these early Herb Ellis 165's remain one of the most popular Jazz boxes in modern Gibson history. Unfortunately, Gibson redesigned the model some years back and the newer Johnny-smith pickup versions just aren't the same. Herb Ellis passed away in 2010, and his namesake ES-165 was discontinued shortly thereafter.

Just like the original ES-175 this guitar features a 16” laminate maple body with Florentine cut-away, 24.75” scale mahogany neck, bound rosewood fingerboard with double parallelogram inlays, and volume and tone controls. Rounded neck carve with 1-11/16” nut, Tune-O-Matic bridge with rosewood base, and trapeze tailpiece.

This guitar recently sustained a headstock break. We have repaired the neck to the point of near invisibilty and are confident that there are no future concerns with the repair. The instrument is otherwise in excellent condition and shows only light use. It's been set-up at Folkway and plays easily and cleanly.

With original hard shell case
