1991 Martin D-45 Custom

A lavishly adorned Martin D-45, this highly customized guitar is a one-of-a-kind creation, and a show-stopper of the highest order. A D-45 is eye-catching in its simplest incarnation, but add a style 45 Deluxe inlaid pickguard, tree of life fingerboard inlays, and matching bridge inlays, and you have the stuff of dreams.

The guitar's fingerboard, bridge and pickguard inlays were done by David Nichols of Custom Pearl Inlay in upstate New York – one of the most highly regarded pearl inlay artists in the biz. The work is flawlessly done, and perfectly matched to the guitar's factory-original style 45 pearl trimmings.

Beyond the pearl, this D-45 features some pretty incredible details. The guitar's top is a stunning cut of spruce. Its grain and color look more like German spruce than Sitka, but there's really no way of knowing for sure. Regardless, the guitar sounds excellent and is a powerful scalloped-braced flatpicker.

Indian rosewood back and sides, Style 45 pearl trim, rosette, and headstock inlay; white bindings, and multi-colored back strip. Gloss lacquer finish throughout, gold Schaller tuners. 1-11/16” nut, 2-1/8” spread at the saddle, 25.4” scale.

The guitar is crack free and in excellent condition. There are no repairs other than a few areas of cleanly reglued binding at the guitar's waist. Original frets; the nut has never been out, and not much to report in the ding/dent/scratch department. Set-up at Folkway, the action measures 5-7 64ths at the 12th fret – just right for flatpicking.

Included with the guitar is a Canadian-made Calton Fibreglass case.
