2019 Cunningham L-00
Jackson Cunningham is among the most quickly up-and-coming guitar builders of this decade. Hailing from Southwest Virginia, Jackson draws obvious inspiration from the vintage Gibson guitars that are and were played by his musical heroes. His own creations are exquisitely crafted recreations of some of the most iconic designs of the 1930s.
The L-00 offered here is a faithful reproduction of an early 1934 L-00, complete with firestripe pickguard, lightly built body, and a heavenly-feeling early V-carve neck. Just like an original early '34 L-00, the guitar features an unbound back and one-ply top biding, a simple 3-ply rosette, and a light non-scalloped bracing. As this guitar was built for export, the bridge and fingerboard are made of ebony, and the pearl dots are actually pearloid, but you can otherwise expect an amazingly accurate creation.
The guitar captures the tone and quick response of a great L-00, the characteristically warm and supportive midrange, the succinct bass, and the thick and meaty trebles. It doesn't have 85 years under its belt, but as it was blueprinted quite accurately, it's about as close in tone as a new guitar can get. Oh, and it plays in tune way better than an old one!
Red spruce top and mahogany back and sides. Mahogany neck with ebony fingerboard, gloss nitrocellulose lacquer finish with late 1933 style sunburst top. Tapered headstock, Waverly tuners, Cunningham screened logo, ebony nut. 1-3/4” nut width, 24.75” scale, 2-5/16” string spread at the saddle.
