1957 Martin D-18

Serial # 156914. A strong D-18 with exceptional presence, clarity, focus, and dryness. It has a solid bass-end with excellent articulation and headroom, woody and musical mid-range, and powerful trebles. This D-18 has got all the ingredients of a perfect flatpicker.

Brought to Folkway by the family of the original owner, the guitar has been treated well through the years. No top or back cracks (not even a pickguard margin crack), a few small side cracks -- the kind typical of D-18s that happen on the flat part of the treble side - no bracing issues or repairs, original finish, frets, tuners, nut, and pins. The original bridge was modified, improperly reglued, and had been bolted down, so it was replaced with a forgery-grade look-alike made and installed by Folkway's Mark Stutman. There remain very minor finish scars around the bridge thanks to the previous work. The balance of the guitar's finish is playworn, but quite attractive and has a fair bit of shine left to it. There is a good-sized area of playwear on the top, around the fingerboard and pickguard, and an average amount of dings and dents on the rest of the guitar's body and neck.

Original neck set, full thickness bridge, aged bone saddle. Action of 5-7 64ths at the 12th fret with medium strings, and there is plenty of adjustment room left on the saddle. Original Kluson tuners hold their tune well, but do have a slightly stiff feel.

Classic 50's Martin neck carve with a compact first position feel tapering to a chunkier and fuller soft V up the neck. 1-11/16" nut width, 25.4" scale.

A wonderful D-18.

With original chipboard case, and a service receipt dated 1965.
