1955 Martin 2-15

Serial # 22206. Martin's Mandolins aren't really what put the company on the map, we'll admit, but the company's craftsmen certainly took pride in their 8 string instruments. This 2-15 features beautifully figured maple back, sides, and neck, a perfect spruce top, and very fine workmanship. The top and back are delicately carved, bound in ivoroid, and finished in an attractive sunburst lacquer. The F holes and bridge were shaped with violin-maker precision, and the engraved tailpiece suggests an accute attention to detail.

The mandolin is stunning in every light. Apart from a well repaired impact wound under the pickguard, this 2-15 is in near mint condition. The finish and frets are close to factory perfect, and the instrument has not seen any modifications or abuse. Set-up by our shop, the mandolin plays beautifully, as well.

It's a loud and percussive mando, and very well suited for leadwork and single-note runs. Not so much a blue-grass instrument, but a good choice for old-time and classical styles. The neck is round and easy to manage, and the feel is spot on.
