1916 Gibson H-1 Mandola
A remarkably open, dark, rich and resonant "teen's Gibson H-1 Mandola, and an inspiring instrument to play. Previously owned by Jeff Hanna of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and accompanied by personalized signed provenance by Mr. Hanna, one would likely have an easy time believing it's one of the better sounding pumpkin-top "dolas out there.
An easy and comfortable instrument to play, this H-1 has excellent fretwork, neck angle and a Loar-period replica adjustable bridge by Randy Wood. The original bridge is in the case pocket for good measure. Excellent top arch, and quite attractive overall condition despite shellac overspray to most of the instrument. There's a well-repaired fine top crack about a quarter inch off the fingerboard extension, and the binding on the bass side of the fingerboard appears to have been very cleanly replaced. Set-up is excellent, and the instrument's beguiling tone makes up for most of its aforementioned flaws.
Spruce and birch body with oval soundhole and ivoroid bindings. Bound ebony fingerboard, original bone nut and Waverly tuners.
