1914 Gibson A-4
Serial # 25148, FON 2652. Originally sold through Fletcher Brothers in Victoria, British Columbia, some 100 years ago, this instrument found its way to Toronto, where, in 1944, it was bought by the mother of a 9 year old girl. That little girl was nearly 80 years old when she brought her mandolin to Folkway to consign. It is an entirely original, unmodified, and absolutely beautiful A4; the nicest we've ever seen, and ready for the next chapter of its legacy.
Gibson's top of the line A-style mandolin, the A-4 is adorned with a beautiful red sunburst finish, fleur-de-lis headstock inlay, Handel inlaid tuner buttons and Ivoroid sound hole ring with doubled purflings. This A4 has a warm and open voice with a woody resonance and a lovely intimacy. Playability is very good despite moderate fret wear, and it has been carefully set-up by us. Finish is in excellent condition, with playwear evident on the back of the neck. Near-invisible 2" long side seam repair done by us.
Carved spruce top, bookmatched birch back and sides, bound ebony fingerboard with pearl dot inlays, 13-7/8" scale and 1-1/4" bone nut.
