1955 Gibson LG-2
Among the finest vintage Gibson flattops we've had in the store in years, this one-owner 1955 LG-2 was brought to us last week with no repair needs other than some set-up. The guitar is nearly perfect, and has survived the years without needing its bridge or any braces reglued, its neck angle corrected, its bridge plate repaired, or any cracks glued. There is an unrepaired partial crack at the inside margin of the pickguard, its crumbled tuner buttons and bridge pins have been replaced, and we've adjusted the string action. The finish is gorgeous, the neck is perfect, and the guitar sounds heavenly, too.
One of the last small-guard scalloped-braced LG-2s, this guitar shares the same build as other early post-war examples. Sometime in 1955 Gibson introduced the larger pickguard and abandoned brace-scalloping, and the sound of the guitars changed a lot. Early versions such as this one are, by contrast, warmer, darker, and more open than those built after 1955.
Sitka and mahogany body with white bindings and white/black top purflings; small bridge with drop-in saddle, tobacco sunburst top with dark brown back and sides. Mahogany and rosewood neck with round carve, 24.75” scale and 1-11/16” nutwidth. Kluson tuners, nylon nut and saddle, black pins. The guitar's owner replaced the tuners when the buttons crumbled, not knowing that replacement buttons were an option. We've reinstalled the correct tuners with new buttons, but there remain very small imprints in the finish on the headstock's back side from the removed tuners. If you're going to find only one flaw on a guitar, that's a pretty good one to choose!
Excellent neck angle and playability, full height saddle with action of 5-6 64ths at the 12th fret. First position frets show some light wear and play cleanly. A great looking and fab sounding LG-2.
