What an unbelievable guitar! With its mix of ivoroid binding, pearl rosette, pyramid bridge, and deep sunburst finish, this custom 0003 is among the most stunning instruments we've ever offered by the Austin, Texas builder.
Straight-grained, quarter sawn, and lushly hued Indian rosewood back and sides, Master-grade, perfectly quartered, Sitka spruce top with no runout to speak of; pre-war style scalloped bracing. Multi-bound purflings on the top and back, colorful mosaic backstrip. Ivoroid-bound ebony fingerboard and slotted headstock; pearl headstock logo, un-adorned fingerboard. Gold Waverly tuning machines, ebony bridge pins, bone nut and compensated saddle. Gloss nitrocellulose lacquer finish with sunburst top.
Standard neck with modified V carve, 2-5/16" spread at the bridge and 1-13/16" nut width. 25.5" scale.
With its larger 12 fret 000 sized body, 12 fret bridge placement, steeper break angle over the nut, and combination of the best tonewoods available, the Collings 0003 has a breathtaking voice. It has a very strong and deep fundamental, with round and present trebles and upper mids, dark, but clearly defined basses, excellent volume, and beautiful harmonic overtones and complexities. It's a dreamy fingerstyle instrument, but equally well suited to a heavy flatpick. Serial # 22966.
