1964 Gibson RB-175
Serial # 191418. With a long-neck design inspired by Pete Seeger's Vega banjos, home-made long necks, and his unique playing style, the Gibson RB-175 was introduced in 1962 and saw production for a period of 10 years. It features an 11" rim with a simple brass hoop tone-ring, 24 brackets, a single coordinator rod, mahogany neck with rosewood fingerboard, and a 25 fret 32" scale length. With a capo at the 3rd fret the banjo is standard-tuned, but played open it's tuned a minor third lower to open E. The fingerboard dots are set up to make sense with capo on the 3rd fret.
The banjo is in great shape; the neck and frets are true, tuners work well, and the set-up has just been done in our shop, complete with custom string gauges. The instrument is original but for a newer Presto tailpiece.
An inviting-sounding baritone 5 string, the long-neck RB-175 offers a different tonality than what most players are accustomed to, and offers a creative alternative.
