1939 Epiphone Broadway
The Epiphone Masterbuilt Broadway was a professional archtop model built from the early 1930's on. The Broadway changed significantly over its production span, and the version offered here is unique to 1937-1939. It features a non-cutaway body of carved walnut and spruce that measures 17.25” across, 5-segment laminated neck with bound fingerboard and large pearl block inlays, multi-layered bindings to the body and headstock, vine-pattern pearl inlays in its asymmetrical Masterbuilt headstock. Its hardware is all original, including gold Grover Sta-Tite tuners, serial numbered bridge, gold Frequensator tailpiece and bound pickguard.
Epiphone was unique among archtop builders in its use of walnut for the back and sides of this model, and the Broadway has a tone that's unique among archtops. It's a very loud guitar, with excellent mid range projection and force. The walnut imparts a clarity and presence that's unlike maple's roundedness, and the guitar's cut is particularly well suited to lead runs and single note playing overtop of a band.
The guitar is in very good original condition with original finish throughout. The outermost layer of binding appears to have been replaced, the tailpiece has been nicely repaired, and the frets are replacements. The guitar plays well and cleanly set up with 12-53 bronze strings.
Very comfortable neck carve that's mostly round with a slight hint of a V. 25.5” scale, 1-3/4” nut.
