One of the coolest CBS era offset models, the Competition Mustangs were only offered from 1969 until 1973 and punched way above their weight as a ‘student model’ guitar. They were finished in one of three colors – Competition Red, Competition Orange, and Competition Burgundy, like this one. If you’re thinking that it’s weird to see a green guitar that’s called burgundy, you’re not alone. Fender mistakenly called their Competition Blue mustang ‘Burgundy’ in their 1969 Catalog, and the rest is history. (It looks green today thanks to the yellowing of the poly clear coat over the blue base coat, and yellow + blue = green). A 1969 Blue (Burgundy) version similar to this one was used by Kurt Cobain with Nirvana, which catapulted the Competition Mustangs to cult stardom, where they remain to this day.

This 1973 model is in great shape and remains almost entirely original. The circuitry and every solder joint are original, as are the tuners, frets, plastic parts, screws, and finish. The only replacement parts are a new aged bone nut that was made here, and the trem arm. We’ve dressed the frets and set the guitar up with 10s and slinky action for a seriously fun playing experience.

Pickups date to 1973, Pots dated 5th week of 1973. Pickup DC values are 5.3k (neck) and 5.5k (bridge). The guitar weighs 7-3/4 lbs. The neck has a rounded shape and a nut width of 1-9/16”. Neck thickness at the 1st fret is .864” and it measures .934” at the 12th fret. 24” scale length.

With original hardshell case.
